Welcome!

Thank you for visiting our blog “A.S.K. ASL” by Amanda Boyle, Sarah Drake and Kerry Daley from the Teaching American Sign Language as a Foreign Language program at Teachers College, Columbia University. We originally started this blog while graduate students at TC, and have all since graduated from the program this May, 2011.

We have designed this blog to serve as a forum for our student's inquiries and access to information about Deaf culture outside of the classroom: where us as teachers can post Deaf events, videos and other recourses. Our hope is that this can be a forum where misconceptions about the Deaf community can be addressed and clarified.

Please also note that we address these issues about Deaf culture as hearing Teachers of ASL. We are not Deaf, but we are very involved in the Deaf community, have many Deaf friends, and have been signing for many years. We realize that we are not spokespeople for Deaf people or the Deaf community, as Deaf people can most certainly speak for themselves. However, as American Sign Language Teachers, we hope to spread this type of Deaf culture awareness in our classrooms to our students, and many of our answers to questions come from our experiences in interacting with the Deaf community.

So, how do you use our blog?

First, if you have a general question about ASL or Deaf culture, you can email us at ASKASLBlog@gmail.com. We will read your question and then post it onto this blog with the answer. Please include, along with your question, whether you would like the post to have your name attached or to be anonymous.

Also, if you see something interesting already on the blog’s wall, please feel free to make a comment.
